What is CBT?

Find out about how CBT works with Alex and get a sense of whether it might be right for you.

Who could this be good for?

Young people who…

  • are aged 16-25
  • may be experiencing anxiety and/or depression
  • are comfortable talking about things that are difficult for them in their current life
  • have the energy and motivation to try new things and experiment with different ways of thinking and behaving
  • are looking for regular continued support over several months

What does CBT offer?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy. Unlike other forms of therapy, the focus is placed on the present rather than past events and experiences. With the support of your therapist, CBT can allow you to:

  • Explore connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviours
  • Identify any unhelpful patterns and look at what might be maintaining the problem
  • Get to know some healthy strategies which you can use moving forward
  • Try new ways of thinking and behaving at a pace that feels comfortable
  • Plan for life post-therapy, such as reviewing key themes that have come up, recapping what’s been helpful, and going over what you’ve learned that could be useful in the future

The details

CBT typically comprises 12-20 weekly sessions, which usually last between 60-90 minutes each. However, you and your worker may agree that fewer sessions are needed.

At the moment we are only able to offer CBT to young people based in Manchester.
