Joel Davies Reunion Memorial Match – 13:00pm on 22nd August 2015 at Castle Park.
On 22nd August 2015 Doncaster Phoenix 3rd XV will host a Doncaster Select XV (from those who were born in 1982/83) at Castle Park in memory of Joel Davies, a former player of that age group.
Joel was a member of the Doncaster Rugby Union Youth Section from the age of 8 and continued all the way through to Colts and Doncaster 2nd XV before moving to Liverpool in 2002 to study Phycology at University following a gap year as a challenge worker. Whilst at Uni, he was diagnosed with mild to moderate depression and later that year unfortunately took his own life. Following his death, Joel’s family set up The Joel Davies Foundation which aimed to financially support undergraduate and post-graduate psychology students. It also aimed to raise awareness and open minds to the complexities of depression. A rugby match was played at Castle Park in Joel’s honour and players from Joel’s age group have decided to try replicate this with the Joel Davies Reunion Memorial match.
Joel Davies Reunion Memorial match (22nd August 2015)
A number of months ago, a few members from Joel’s age group at Doncaster Rugby started discussing the possibility of setting up some kind of reunion for the old team. A Facebook Group was set up to gauge interest and following the inevitable reminiscing and storytelling, it was recognised that it just would not be the same without Joel. Joel’s family were approached about potentially setting up a match which could be dedicated to his memory, and not only were they keen, Joel’s younger brother Josh, who used to watch the team, will play in Joel’s old position at inside centre. The Davies’ were also keen that any funds raised would go to 42nd Street.
Support our Great Manchester 10k Team!
A wonderful team of runners from 42nd Street and our charity partners at Access Advertising are running the Great Manchester 10k run this year.
